Project Zomboid admin commands: the complete server guide

Make yourself admin, then manage players, items, weather and events with the commands server owners use most.

Admin commands let you fix problems, help players and run events on your Project Zomboid server. You can use them in two places:

  • In game: type them into chat, starting with a slash, e.g. /kick "PlayerName". You need admin access first.
  • In the server console (the Console tab in your Nexcom dashboard): type the same command without the slash, e.g. kick "PlayerName". The console always has full admin rights.

Put player names in double quotes, especially if they contain spaces.

1. Make yourself an admin

Open the console and run:

setaccesslevel "YourName" admin

Access levels, from most to least powerful: admin, moderator, overseer, gm, observer. Use none to remove access. Give trusted helpers moderator rather than full admin.

The server's own admin account is called admin. Its password is the Admin password in your dashboard's Settings tab. Keep it private.

2. Managing players

CommandWhat it does
playersLists everyone online
kick "Name"Removes a player (they can rejoin)
banuser "Name" / unbanuser "Name"Bans or unbans a player's account
adduser "Name" "password"Creates an account on a whitelisted server
addusertowhitelist "Name"Adds an existing player to the whitelist
teleport "Name1" "Name2"Moves Name1 to Name2. Great for rescuing stuck players.
servermsg "Your message"Sends a message to everyone on the server

3. Items, skills and helping players

  • additem "Name" "Base.Axe" 1 gives a player an item. Item IDs look like Base.Axe; a mod's items use its own prefix.
  • addxp "Name" Woodwork=2 adds experience to a skill. Skills use their internal names, e.g. Carpentry is Woodwork.
  • addvehicle "Base.CarNormal" "Name" spawns a vehicle next to a player.
  • invisible "Name" and noclip "Name" toggle admin abilities. Handy for investigating, but use them openly so players trust you. Run help to see the full list, including god mode.

4. World and events

  • save saves the world now. Do this before restarts and big changes.
  • startrain / stoprain control the weather.
  • chopper triggers the helicopter event. Expect chaos.
  • createhorde 50 "Name" spawns a horde of 50 zombies near that player. Run it with caution.
  • gunshot plays a gunshot sound that attracts nearby zombies.
  • quit saves and shuts the server down safely. On Nexcom, use the Stop button, which does this for you.

Tips for running a friendly server

  • Run help in the console to see every command your server version supports. Commands can change between builds, and mods can add more.
  • Announce restarts in advance: servermsg "Restart in 5 minutes". You can automate this in the dashboard's Schedules tab.
  • Write your rules down, for example on Discord, before you need to enforce them. Bans are easier to explain when rules are clear.
